Confirmation by Robustness Analysis: A Bayesian Account

چکیده

Abstract Some authors claim that minimal models have limited epistemic value (Fumagalli, 2016; Grüne-Yanoff, 2009a). Others defend the benefits of modelling by invoking role robustness analysis for hypothesis confirmation (see, e.g., Levins, 1966; Kuorikoski et al., 2010) but such arguments find much resistance Odenbaugh & Alexandrova, 2011). In this paper, we offer a Bayesian rationalization and defence view can play confirmatory role, thereby shed light on potential confirmation. We illustrate our argument reference to case study from macroeconomics. At same time, also show there are cases in which is detrimental characterize these link them recent investigations evidential variety (Landes, 2020b, 2021; Osimani Landes, forthcoming). conclude over confirm, its depends concrete circumstances.

Confirmation and reduction: a Bayesian account

Various scientific theories stand in a reductive relation to each other. In a recent article, we have argued that a generalized version of the Nagel-Schaffner model (GNS) is the right account of this relation. In this article, we present a Bayesian analysis of how GNS impacts on confirmation. We formalize the relation between the reducing and the reduced theory before and after the reduction us...

An Objective Bayesian Account of Confirmation

This paper revisits Carnap’s theory of degree of confirmation, identifies certain shortcomings, and argues that a new approach based on objective Bayesian epistemology can overcome these shortcomings.

Confirmation via Analogue Simulation: A Bayesian Analysis

Analogue simulation is a novel mode of scientific inference found increasingly within modern physics, and yet all but neglected in the philosophical literature. Experiments conducted upon a table-top ‘source system’ are taken to provide insight into features of an inaccessible ‘target system’, based upon a syntactic isomorphism between the relevant modelling frameworks. An important example is ...

“Damned by Faint Praise”: A Bayesian account

“Damned by Faint Praise” is the phenomenon whereby weak positive information leads to a negative change in belief. However, in a Bayesian model of belief revision positive information can seemingly only exert a positive change in belief. We introduce a version of Bayes’ Theorem incorporating the concept of epistemic closure. This reformalization is able to predict the conditions under which a ‘...

A Bayesian account of ‘hysteria’

This article provides a neurobiological account of symptoms that have been called 'hysterical', 'psychogenic' or 'medically unexplained', which we will call functional motor and sensory symptoms. We use a neurobiologically informed model of hierarchical Bayesian inference in the brain to explain functional motor and sensory symptoms in terms of perception and action arising from inference based...
